Claire Martin picked up a win at No. 6 singles which proved to be the winning point as the Eastern Illinois women's tennis team opened Ohio Valley Conference play with a 4-3 win over Jacksonville State.
EIU improved to 7-9 on the season and 1-0 in the OVC. JSU fell to 8-2 overall, 1-1 in the OVC.
EIU jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match as the Panthers won the doubles point picking up wins at No.1 and No.2 doubles.Â
Stella Cliffe and
Grace Summers won 6-2 at No.1 doubles.Â
Karla Contreras and
Emily Pugachevsky won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.Â
In singles play EIU pushed its lead to 2-0 in the match with Summers picking up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Alessia Locati at No. 2 singles. JSU quickly evened the match at 2-2 winning at No. 1 and No.3 singles.
Pugachevsky helped EIU regain the lead with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Elena Tendero at No. 4 singles. JSU evened the match at 3-3 with a win at No. 5 singles which set up Martin's match at No. 6 singles as the deciding point.
Martin would beat Marine Alberteau 7-6 (4), 6-3 to help the Panthers get off to a 1-0 start in OVC play.Â
The Panthers will return to action on Tuesday hosting SIUE. Current weather conditions call for snow in the forecast in Charleston that day so the location for the match may be changed due to weather.
