EIU Women's Tennis Wins 6-1 On Senior Day

Grace Summers ties EIU career record for singles wins

CHARLESTON, Ill. – After dodging morning thunderstorms in the area, Eastern Illinois and Southeast Missouri moved their Ohio Valley Conference match indoors to the Lantz Fieldhouse where the Panthers picked up a 6-1 win on senior day for EIU.
 
The Panthers lone senior, Grace Summers, won the clinching point at No. 2 singles as she moved into a tie for career singles wins with her 55th all-time victory at EIU.
 
EIU improved to 11-12 overall, 5-3 in the OVC.  SEMO dropped to 4-13 overall, 1-7 in the OVC.   The Panthers final regular season match will be played on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. against UT Martin at the Danville Tennis Center.
 
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead winning the doubles point with wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 2 doubles.  Stella Cliffe and Summers won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles while Emily Pugachevsky and Karla Contreras won 6-2 at No. 2 doubles. 
 
In singles play EIU was able to extend its lead to 3-1 with wins by Cliffe and Shristi Slaria in singles play.  Cliffe won 6-1, 6-3 over Olexsandra Doroshenko at No. 1 singles.  Slaria won 6-2, 6-2 over Alessandra Maya Thompson at No. 4 singles.
 
SEMO scored its lone point of the match with a win by Anais Emelie at No. 5 singles.
 
Summers then beat Kseniya Zonova at No. 2 singles in three sets to hand the Panthers the win.  Summers winning score was 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.
 
EIU's final two points came at No. 3 and No. 6 singles.  Claire Martin continued her strong spring season with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.  Rachel Papavasilopoulos won at No. 3 singles in three sets playing her first tennis since the first weekend of February.  She won in three sets 6-7 (7-5), 7-5, 6-1.
