SIUE Sweeps EIU Softball

The Cougars won both games 5-4

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Eastern Illinois softball played a mid-week conference doubleheader at SIUE Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars posted a 5-4 comeback win over the Panthers in game one of the day's play followed by a second 5-4 victory in game two.

The Panthers fall to 28-11 overall and 7-3 in the OVC.

EIU will return to action at home next weekend with a pair of conference doubleheaders. They host Tennessee Tech on Saturday April 21 to open play. First pitch is set at 1 pm.
 
Game 1
The Panthers led 4-1 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning needing only three outs to clinch their eight conference win. The Cougars rallied to score four runs on four hits to take the 5-4 walk off victory over EIU.

Haley Mitchell led EIU at the plate going a perfect 3-for-3. Mitchell homered in the second inning tallying her only RBI of the game and put the Panthers up 2-0. Megan Burton doubled to right center in the third scoring freshman Morgan LaMore as the Panthers jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

SIUE tallied their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning off a double from Alana Cobb-Adams while Bailey Concatto doubled in the bottom of the seventh recording two RBI to spark SIUE's four run comeback win.

Jessica Wireman pitched 6.1 innings for the Panthers with Michelle Rogers coming in for relief. Wireman retired 10 batters and fell to 13-6 on the mound this season. Emily Ingles picked up the win improving to 11-6.
 
Game 2
SIUE picked up another 5-4 win over EIU in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader. The Panthers recorded nine hits with Kayla Bear and Mady Poulter each tallying two.

Both teams scored in the first inning to hold a 1-1 tie through the top of the fifth inning.  The Cougars added two runs off two hits in the bottom of the fifth jumping out to a 3-1 lead. Burton, LaMore, and Andrea Roberts singled in the sixth inning with Roberts tallying an RBI. The Cougars responded and scored one run in the sixth to keep the lead at two runs.

The Panthers scored two runs on three hits in the seventh inning to tie the game up at 4-4. Bear doubled to left center to spark EIU's offense. Poulter and Mitchell each recorded singles, while Mitchell and Maria DeVito earned RBI in the inning. Despite EIU's offensive comeback, SIUE managed one more run in the seventh inning to take the 5-4 win in game two.

Rogers pitched 6.2 innings for EIU and recorded five strikeouts. She fell to 13-4 on the season. Corrina Rivas improved to 4-5 on the mound with three strikeouts over seven innings of work.
