NASHVILLE – Eastern Illinois men's tennis season came to an end on Friday morning as the Panthers lost in the opening round of the 2018 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament to No. 3 seed Jacksonville State. EIU lost the match 4-0 to finish the season at 6-17 overall.
In doubles play EIU won at No. 2 doubles with
Freddie O'Brien and
Trent Reiman winning their match 6-3 over Sergio Lizarraga and Pablo Caffarena. JSU would win at No. 3 doubles 6-3 and No. 1 doubles 7-5 to claim the point.
In singles action JSU won at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles to win the necessary four points to advance to the semifinal round of the OVC Tournament.
Playing at No. 1 singles
Freddie O'Brien had pushed his match to a third set against Aljaz Kaplja. O'Brien won the opening set 6-4 before falling 6-4 in the second. Kaplja was leading 1-0 in the third when JSU won the match.
Playing at No. 5 singles
Trent Reiman was about to begin a third set against Guillermo Agost when the Gamecocks won the match. Agost won the opening set 7-5 before Reiman rallied to win the second set 7-6.
Playing at No. 6 singles
Jared Woodson was winning the match when it was left unfinished. Woodson won the opening set 7-6 over Lizarraga and was leading 4-1 in the second set.
EIU's three seniors –
Trent Reiman,
Grant Reiman and
Jared Woodson – all played their final EIU matches on Friday.
On Thursday evening O'Brien was named to the All-OVC second team.
