Baseball Comes Up Short In Rubber Match

Morehead State defeated EIU baseball by a score of 7-5 on Sunday.

Charleston, Ill.- Morehead State scores late to take the series rubber match against Eastern Illinois. The Eagles defeated the Panthers Sunday afternoon, 7-5.

With the loss Eastern Illinois drops to 16-27 (5-16 OVC), while Morehead State improves to 27-18 (14-7 OVC).

Spenser Dexter got the start on the hill for the Panthers in Sunday's rubber game. Dexter tossed 5.1 innings, with seven hits five runs, four walks, and two strikeouts.

Joseph Duncan kicked off the game for the Panthers with a leadoff double to right center. Jimmy Huber drove in the first run of the game, singling up the middle in the following at bat.

Tyler Niemann would answer back for Morehead State in the top of the second inning. Niemann drove a two run homer to right field to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead.

The Panthers would fight back scoring two runs to take the lead back from the Eagles. Ryan Knernschield led off the bottom of the second with a single up the middle. Knernschield would score when Joe Duncan reached on a throwing error by Braxton Morris. Dougie Parks would single up the middle to score Duncan to give EIU a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth the Panthers would hit back-to-back home runs to take a 5-2 lead. Parks would homer in his third consecutive game driving a solo shot to left center. Hunter Morris would follow up driving a homer to right field.

Morehead State would tie the game in the top of the sixth inning off a couple of singles. The Eagles would take the lead in the top of the eighth inning when Hunter Fain hit a sacrifice fly which would turn out to be the winning run.

Clayton Slifer would suffer the loss on the hill for the Panthers as he dropped to 1-2 on the season.

Parks finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, a run, home run, and walk. Morris went 2-for-4 with an RBI, run, home run, and a walk. Govern finished 2-for-5 on the afternoon.
