Bear Hits a Walk-Off Single To Sweep MSU

The Panthers won game one 2-0 and game two 3-2

CHARLESTON, Ill. - Kayla Bear hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure EIU Softball's sweep over Morehead State. The Panthers shut out the Eagles with a 2-0 game one win. They turned around and took game two 3-2 in eight innings of play.

EIU improves to 33-17 overall and 12-8 in the OVC. Morehead State falls to 27-19 overall and 8-12 in the OVC.

The Panthers will close out the regular season tomorrow at home with a doubleheader against a first place Eastern Kentucky. EIU will honor their six seniors prior to first pitch at 1 pm.

Game 1
Jessica Wireman pitched her fourth shut out of the season recording the 2-0 win on the mound for the Panthers. She improves to 14-10 on the season and retired 10 Morehead State batters.

The Panthers scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Andrea Roberts was walked to get on base early for EIU. Taylor Monahan was next the next at bat singling to left center advancing Roberts to second. Kristen Ames entered the game to pinch run for Roberts and eventually scored on a bunt by Bear to give the Panthers a 1-0 edge.

EIU added one more in the bottom of the sixth inning. Megan Burton would score the Panthers second run of the game following a single from Roberts and a throwing error by MSU's Cassie Griffin. 

MSU was held to only two hits in game one. Chelsea McManaway collected the loss on the mound falling to 16-9 on the season. She recorded 10 strikeouts in the game.

Game 2
The Panthers took the night cap with a 3-2 win over the Eagles in extra innings. Bear would hit a a walk-off single to score Kiley Pelker giving EIU the sweep.

Both teams scored two runs in the first inning. Aubrey Bennet reached first base on a throwing error by third baseman Tori Johnson and scored as MSU's catcher Robyn Leighton homered to left field tallying two RBI on the play. The Panthers responded with four hits and two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. Haley Mitchell hit a two-run single through the right side to tie the game. Bear, Mady Poulter, and Davis each tallied a hit in the inning.

The Panthers entered the bottom of the eight inning with pinch hitters for their first two batters. Pelker entered the game for Morgan LaMore and singled to left center, while Jennifer Ames pinch hit for Tori Johnson and singled to right center advancing Pelker to third base. Bear would take the next at bat singling up the middle to score Pelker for the Panthers 3-2 walk-off victory.

Bear finished the game 3-for-5 at the plate with one run, one RBI, and one stolen base. Mitchell tallied two hits and two RBI. Leighton was 2-for-3 for the Eagles.

Michelle Rogers pitched a complete game improving to 17-6 on the mound. Allison Rager falls to 10-9 for MSU.
