CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois volleyball team heads to Indiana to compete in the Butler Top Dog Challenge this weekend. The Panthers are coming off a third place finish in the Panther Invitational from this past weekend. EIU heads into this weekend with a record of 2-2.
Maggie Runge was named to the Panther Invitational All-Tournament Team. The honor marks the third All-Tournament team mention for the junior middle hitter. Runge finished the tournament with a team-high 23 blocks this weekend. On the offensive side of the court, Runge posted 23 kills (1.53).
Laurel Bailey leads the Panther offense in kills with 48 on the season. Bailey had two double-doubles during the Panther Invitational this weekend.
Taylor Smith is second on the team in kills heading into this weekend with 24. Smith also earned a double-double during this weekend.
On the defensive side of the court, Runge led the panthers with 23 blocks.
Anne Hughes leads the Panthers in digs with 88 on the season.
Freshman newcomer
Bailey Chandler saw extensive action in the starting line-up for EIU helping the Panthers go 2-2 in the Panther Invite. Chandler was first on the team in assists for the weekend finishing with 72 to average 4.80 per set. Chandler also contributed defensively with 26 digs.
The Panthers will face Illinois State on Friday to kick off the tournament. Illinois State heads into the weekend with a 2-1 record. Kaylee Martin leads the Redbirds offense with 31 kills entering this weekend. On the defensive side of the court, Marissa Stockman leads the Redbirds with 10 blocks.
Tournament host Butler heads into the Top Dog Challenge with a record of 0-3. Natalie Ravenell leads the Bulldogs offense with 27 kills. Team leader in blocks, Melody Davidson (15) looks to help guide Butler to their first win of the season this weekend.
Auburn heads into the weekend sporting a 1-1 record. Chesney McClellan heads into this weekend leading Auburn in kills with 19. Bella Rosenthall looks to keep the Auburn defense in check with her team-high 36 digs.
Following the Top Dog Challenge, Eastern Illinois volleyball will travel to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in the Drake Bulldogs tournament.(Sept. 7-9)
