Indianapolis, Ind. – The Eastern Illinois Volleyball team wrapped up the Butler Bulldogs Tournament Saturday afternoon. The Panthers took on the Bulldogs at 12 pm, and closed out the tournament against Auburn at 3 pm. The Panthers fell to both Butler and Auburn in three sets to finish the tournament in fourth place.
EIU falls to 2-5 on the season after this weekend.
BUTLER 3, EIU 0
Butler came out against EIU aggressive in the first set hitting for their best percentage of the match at 73%. Butler jumped out to an early 5-0 run kicked off by a
Kylie Michael attacking error. Butler was able to string
together a couple of runs throughout the set to pull away from the Panthers in the first set. Brooke Gregory led the Bulldog offense with a team high four kills.
Butler jumped a couple of 3-0 runs to start the match to give them a nice cushioned lead over the Panthers. However, EIU would cut the lead down halfway through the second set with a 5-0 run started by a
Lexi May. The Bulldogs were able to hold off the Panthers taking the second set 25-18.
Butler was able to secure the match sweep against the Panthers, defeating EIU 28-26. EIU grabbed the lead early jumping out to a 7-2 lead. The Panthers had the lead all the way into the final points of the set. Butler was able to force a win-by-two scenario. Butler was able to capture the match and pull off the comeback winning the third set 28-26.
Maggie Runge finished with seven kills, two blocks, and an ace.
Taylor Smith finished with eight assists, five kills, three blocks, and an ace.
AUBURN 3, EIU 0
The first set started with an Auburn 5-0 run ignited by a Gwyn Jones kill. Auburn was able to keep the lead throughout the set with the help from a couple of run. Chesney McClellan was the difference maker in the set as she led the Auburn offense with four kills. Smith led the EIU attack with a set leading four kills. The second set was similar to the first set as Auburn found themselves with a comfortable lead jumping out to a 5-0 run early on. Auburn was able to hold off the Panthers to capture the second set 25-17.
Smith aimed to help the Panthers offensively in the third set to spoil the Auburn sweep. Smith posted a set leading five kills for the Panthers in the third set, however it was not enough as Auburn was able to secure the match sweep against EIU. Auburn hit for their best percentage in the match in the third set hitting 85%.
Smith finished with 13 kills and six digs.
Anne Hughes led the Panthers defense with 13 digs.
The Panthers will travel top Des Moines, Iowa where they will compete in the Drake Bulldogs tournament. (Sept. 7-9)
