CHARLESTON, Ill. – A solid defensive effort was rewarded with a quick counter strike for the only goal of the afternoon as Eastern Illinois beat Austin Peay, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Lakeside Field.
EIU improved to 3-5-3 overall, 2-1-1 in the OVC while APSU fell to 6-4-1 overall, 1-2-1 in the OVC.
The two teams clamped down on defense around the goal box all afternoon as EIU and Austin Peay both registered two shots on goal in the first half. The Panthers had an additional shot hit the cross bar while the Governors had a shot hit off the post.
In the second half the solid defensive effort continued as EIU did not allow a second half shot on goal allowing
Sara Teteak to post her third shutout of the OVC season and fifth overall this year.
The lone goal of the match came on a quick counter as
Kate Olson sent the ball ahead to
Lexi Ketterhagen who then fed it to the right side of the box for a shot by
Kayla Stolfa in the 71st minute. It was Stolfa's first goal of the season as she beat APSU goalkeeper Mary Parker Powell.
APSU pressed in the final 18 minutes of the match finishing the day with 11 total shots including six in the second half. One late shot attempt was blocked in the box by
Henar Urteaga.
Claire Larose had five shots in the match for APSU. Shelby Stewart and Renee Semaan had the Governors shots on goal.
EIU finished the match with eight total shots. Olson and
Sarah DeWolf both had two shots and one shot on goal.
