Volleyball Defeats Chicago State In Five Sets

EIU volleyball defeated Chicago State Tuesday evening 3-2

Chicago, Ill.- The Eastern Illinois volleyball team traveled to Chicago, Illinois Tuesday night to take on Chicago State. EIU was able to rally and take the last two sets winning 3-2.

EIU advances to 6-11 on the season with the win.

The Cougars were able to take the opening set, defeating the Panthers 25-16. Chicago State would hit for their best hitting percentage in the first set, combining for an average of .395. The first set featured only eight attacking errors for both teams combined. Lauren Dela Cruz led the Chicago State offense with a set-high six kills.

EIU battled back to take the second set 25-20. The Panthers would capitalize on nine attacking errors and two ball-handling errors from the Cougars to take the set. EIU combined for their second highest hitting percentage of the match, hitting for an even .300. Laurel Bailey led the Panthers offense with six kills.

Chicago State and EIU traded sets with the cougars taking the third set 25-19 and the Panthers forcing a fifth set by winning the fourth set 25-18. The Panthers defense played a role in the fourth set collecting three blocks against the Cougars offense.

EIU was able to secure the comeback taking the fifth set 15-11. The Panthers offense would collect their highest hitting percentage of the match at .389. While, the EIU defense would keep the Chicago State offense in check with two blocks. The difference maker in the set would be the errors against EIU, the Panthers only had one error throughout the fifth set compared to seven of Chicago State. Kylie Michael and Katie Sommer led the Panthers offense with three kills each.

Bailey collected her seventh double-double of the season finishing with 15 kills, 13 digs, three blocks, three assists, and an ace. Michael collected her first double-double of her career finishing with 11 digs, 10 kills, one ace, and one block.

The Panthers return home to Lantz arena Friday to host OVC opponent Southeast Missouri Sept. 28 at 7 pm.
