Baseball Falls In Rubber Match

EIU baseball falls to Jacksonville State 12-5 in series the series finale Sunday.

The Eastern Illinois baseball team closed out their series against Jacksonville State on Sunday. The Gamecocks took the series from the Panthers with a 12-4 win.
 
With the loss EIU drops to 4-9 (1-2 OVC), while JSU improves to 7-10 (2-1 OVC).
 
The Panthers opened the game aggressively with an early two run lead in the top of the first inning. Jimmy Govern drew a lead off walk to kick off the inning. Dane Toppel would move Govern into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. The Panthers would then draw back-to-back hit by pitches to load the bases.  Christian Pena would drive in the first run of the inning with a walk. The second run of the inning would be scored on a balk.
 
Jacksonville State quickly responded with two runs in the bottom of the first. The Gamecocks would score two runs on a Pena throwing error.
 
Govern would grab the lead back for the Panthers in the top of the second with his third homerun of the series. Jacksonville State once again would respond in the next half inning to even the game at three runs.
 
Grant Emme would give the Panthers the lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI single to right field.
 
Jacksonville State would be able to secure the victory in the rubber match scoring nine unanswered runs throughout till the ninth inning to give them a commanding 12-4 lead.
 
Ryan Ignoffo would cut the lead down to eight runs with a solo homerun in the top of the ninth. However, it would not be enough as Jacksonville State would take the conference series form the Panthers.
