EIU drops a tough and competitive match against Southeast Missouri State by a score of 3-0. Both teams relied on their defense in this match, but ultimately the Panthers could not hold on. The set scores were as followed: 23-25, 22-25, 18-25. Eastern Illinois now drops to 0-7 in the conference after today's match.
EIU scored their most points of the day in set one. After being up 13-10 and 20-16, the Redhawks fought their way back to win the set 25-23.
Kameryn Sillmon and
Kylie Michael both had five kills in the first while Michael also posted two service aces.
Christina Martinez Mundo had eight digs in the first set, and was the leader on defense. Southeast Missouri was led by Zoey Beasley with three kills in the first and Claire Ochs with eight assists.
The second set saw another close battle between SEMO and EIU. The score was even at 22-22 towards the end of the set, when the Redhawks scored the last three points to end it by a score of 25-22.
Emily Wilcox had four kills for the Panthers in the second, and
Kameryn Sillmon had four block assists along with one block solo. Beasley had six more kills for SEMOÂ and Mackenzie Meehan had three block assists and one block solo.
The Panthers day came to an end after Southeast Missouri won the third by a score of 25-18. EIU posted a .211 hitting percentage, their highest of the day, but came up short in the set. Wilcox and
Ireland Hieb both had three kills while Martinez Mundo collected nine more digs. Beasley posted five more kills and Megan Harris had three service aces in the final set.
The Redhawks were led by Beasley with 14 kills, Ochs with 29 assists and 10 digs, and Laney Malloy with eight kills and 11 digs. SEMO had five players post double-digit digs. Southeast Missouri State improves to 14-5 on the season.
EIU had contributions from Wilcox with nine kills and four block assists, Michael with seven kills and three block assists, Sillmon with seven kills and six block assists, and Martinez Mundo with 23 digs. The Panthers drop to 7-10.
Eastern Illinois will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Belmont to play the Bruins on Friday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m.
