For the second straight year Eastern Illinois linebacker
Jason Johnson has been named to the Hero Sports Sophomore All-American team after leading the Ohio Valley Conference in tackles for a second straight season.
Â
Due to the 2020-21 season not being counted as a year of participation by the NCAA for football student-athletes Johnson qualified for the sophomore All-American team for a second straight season.
Â
This past fall he led the OVC in tackles finishing the year with 112 tackles including 63 solo tackles. Johnson became the 39th player in school history to finish with 100 or more tackles in a season. He would finish the regular season ranked seventh in the FCS in solo tackles and first in the FCS in fumble recoveries with four. Johnson added eight tackles for loss, two pass break-ups and a forced fumble. He spearheaded an EIU defense that was ninth in the FCS in pass defense while leading the OVC in team tackles for loss.   The Panthers were second in the OVC in turnovers gained.Â
Â
Johnson made the Hero Sports Sophomore All-American team last spring after leading the OVC with 66 tackles. He was a second team Freshman All-American in 2019 finishing the year with 59 tackles.
