CHARLESTON, Ill. – Eastern Illinois volleyball built some early momentum on Monday afternoon winning the first set against Austin Peay before the Governors came back to win the final three sets in a 3-1 win at First Mid Court at Lantz Arena.
Â
APSU won the match 19-25, 25-22, 25-11, 25-12 to improve to 6-2 on the season. EIU fell to 0-8 on the year and will host Tennessee State next Sunday and Monday.
Â
In the opening set EIU followed the hot hitting of senior
Laurel Bailey as she had seven of her 16 kills in the match in the opening set hitting .538.  The Panthers were strong at the net as well with
Kameryn Sillmon picking up four block assists as EIU had nine total blocks in the opening set. EIU took advantage of three straight Austin Peay attack errors and a kill by Sillmon to first tie the set at 12-12 and then take a 15-12 lead. The Panthers were able to keep the lead at multiple points and closed out with a 4-0 run with three kills by Bailey.
Â
In the second set the Governors adjusted and pushed the ball around the offense with multiple players getting kills. Brooke Moore led the attack with six kills followed by Chloe Stitt with four. EIU had four kills each by Bailey and
Kylie Michael as each player had nine swings in the set. The Panthers again had strong play at the net with seven blocks including two block assists by
Emily Wilcox. With the match tied at 9-9, APSU used a 9-4 run to separate and closed the match with two kills by Moore in the final five Governors points.
Â
In the final two sets Austin Peay attacked around the EIU block as the Panthers did not record a block in the final two sets.  APSU hit .469 in the third set with Stitt getting five kills.  They improved that hitting percentage to .517 in the final set.Â
Â
Bailey finished with a double-double for EIU with 16 kills and 15 digs. Michael had 11 kills. Sillmon finished with five blocks. Â
Christina Martinez Mundo had 11 digs for the Panthers.
