Eastern Illinois volleyball defeated Northern Illinois Thursday evening at Lantz Arena in the first of two match-ups in the home-and-home series. EIU won 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-15, 25-15).
Danielle Allen and
Kylie Michael led the Panthers in the first set with four and three kills each. They took a 7-2 lead early, but NIU tied the match at 15 and again at 23.
Emily Wilcox finished the set with a kill, and had eight on the night.
NIU took control of the second set and were up 6-0 to start. Katie Jablonski led the way for the Huskies with four kills in the set, and Grace Balensiefer had five assists. The Panthers were able to draw close midway through the second getting the score to 12-13, but NIU took the second set 19-25.
TaKenya Stafford led the Panthers in the third with five kills with
Summerlyn Smith pitching in 10 assists. EIU closed out the third on a 12-1 run to go up 2-1 in the match.
The Panther's
Ella Collins had three kills and Allen had four to win the fourth set. EIU ended the set with a score of 25-15. Allen ended with 15 kills, Smith with 30 assists, and
Christina Martinez Mundo had 26 digs.
NIU was led by Kaitlyn Bell with nine kills, Balensiefer with 31 assists, and Angie Gromos with six blocks.
Volleyball is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. against NIU for the second matchup against the Huskies.
