CHARLESTON, Ill. – In another closely contested game in their weekend Ohio Valley Conference series, Austin Peay came up with an RBI single in the seventh inning to lift the Governors to a 2-1 win over Eastern Illinois during a windy Sunday afternoon at Williams Field.
Â
Bailey Shorter delivered an RBI single down the right field line with one out that scored Emily Harkleroad with what proved to be the game winning run. Harkleroad reached to open the inning on a hit-by-pitch.
Â
Shorter then came up big in the bottom of the seventh defensively as she robbed
Morgan Lewis of an extra base hit, laying out to make a catch in left center field. Lewis had one of the Panthers four hits on the day driving in EIU's run in contest in the third inning with a single up middle. The single scored
Riley Dittmar who had singled to open the inning.
Â
EIU's other two hits in the game came from
Maddie Swart and
Lindy Milkowski as APSU starter Jordan Benefiel went the distance to improve to 11-7.
Â
Tieghan Morio had the start in the circle for EIU pitching well for five innings allowing just one run in the second on a single by Morgan Zuege.
Â
Kaitlyn Reifsteck pitched the final two innings in relief for EIU falling to 0-2 on the year.
Â
Lexi Osowski led APSU with two hits as the Governors improved to 24-20 overall, 11-9 in the OVC.
Â
EIU dropped to 21-26 overall, 6-14 in the OVC as the Panthers will host SIUE in an OVC doubleheader on Wednesday.
