CHARLESTON, Ill. –
Christine Gouws clinched the final point on Monday afternoon for Eastern Illinois women's tennis as the Panthers ended the 2022 season with a 4-3 win over future Ohio Valley Conference member Southern Indiana.
Gouws won the deciding point playing at No. 2 singles with a three-set win over Rachel McCorkle. Gouws won 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-2.
Earlier in the match Gouws teamed with
Elizaveta Bukraba-Ulanova at No. 1 doubles as the pair clinched the doubles point for EIU with a 7-6 (7-2) win. USI had opened doubles play with a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles before EIU evened the doubles competition with a 7-5 win a No. 2 doubles by
Brittany Steven and
Lauren Ellis.
Steven would put the Panthers up 2-0 in the match with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over Abby Brown.Â
Bukraba-Ulanova would extend the EIU lead to 3-0 in the match with her win at No. 1 singles over Lauren Rowe winning 6-4, 6-0.
Southern Indiana would win the next three singles matches at No. 6, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to set the stage for Gouws clinching win at No. 2 singles.
EIU ends the year at 4-18 overall. Southern Indiana fell to 7-11.
