EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Eastern Illinois (8-8, 2-1 OVC) volleyball takes the win in their Ohio Valley Conference midweek matchup against OVC newcomer Southern Indiana (0-14, 0-3 OVC) in four sets. EIU combined for 62 kills in the match which is tied for their second most in a match this season. The set scores were: 26-24, 25-22, 23-25, 25-21.
The Panthers battled all night long on Tuesday despite picking up their second OVC win of the season. The largest margin of victory was held to just four points the entire match. EIU did post a total of 62 kills compared to the Screaming Eagles' 36.
Kaitlyn Flynn came prepared to Evansville where she posted her second most kills of the season with 27. She led the team with a hitting percentage of .353, her third highest in a match this season. She was also active on the defensive end collected 16 digs and four total blocks. Flynn also recorded two service aces.
Opposite of Flynn, the reigning OVC Offensive Player of the Week
Giovana Larregui Lopez posted 15 kills and 10 digs for her third straight double-double (sixth overall). The one-two punch of Larregui Lopez and Flynn combined for 42 kills on the night.
Tori Mohesky also added seven kills for EIU.
Catalina Rochaix was active as the lead setter for the match with 29 assists, nine digs and one kill. Her running mate
Summerlyn Smith recorded 19 assists for her second most on the season. The Panthers posted a .151 hitting percentage on the day compared to USI's .123.
With a new career high in digs per set,
Christina Martinez Mundo posted 35 digs in four set for an average of 8.75. Her total kills in the match were also her second most in a match this season.
Ireland Hieb and
Annika Black also posted two total blocks each in the win.
The Panthers were able to collected a total of 83 digs on the night which is the sixth most for any OVC team in a match this season. EIU also recorded six more services aces to their total.
Southern Indiana was led by Leah Anderson with 11 kills and 13 digs. Katherine Koch also led all setters with 30 assists in the match. Abby Bednar also had nine kills and 12 digs for the Screaming Eagles. They will host Lindenwood this weekend at home.
EIU will return to Lantz Arena this weekend for a matchup with OVC newcomer Arkansas Little Rock starting on Friday, Sept. 30 at 6 p.m. They will play their second match on Saturday, Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+
