ALBUQUERQUE, NM - Eastern Illinois built a five-point lead in overtime on Tuesday night on baskets by
Macy McGlone and
Ellie Buzzelle but the Panthers could not pull off the upset in The Pit falling to New Mexico 81-78 in the extra period.
McGlone was a force all night for the Panthers finishing with 29 points and 14 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double.
McGlone scored EIU's first four points in overtime and her 3-pointer with 1:58 remaining in overtime pushed the Panthers out to a 76-71 lead.
Buzzelle would keep it a two-possession game with free throws with 1:19 remaining as she finished with 19 points for EIU.
New Mexico closed the game on a 7-0 run. Viane Cumber gave the Lobos the lead with 32 seconds left and iced the game with free throws with seven seconds left.  She would score seven of her 14 points for the game in the overtime session.
For the third straight game during their Thanksgiving week trip, EIU got off to a good start leading 24-15 after one quarter and 43-32 at the half. Â Â EIU shot 58 percent in the opening quarter hitting 10-of-17 from the floor.
EIU trailed by four points with 1:37 left in regulation but scored four straight points by Buzzelle and McGlone to force overtime with the score tied 66-66.
Miah Monahan rounded out the EIU double figure scorers with 16 points.
The Lobos had a pair of 20-point scorers in the game with Paula Reus scoring 25 and Nyah Wilson 21.
