Eastern Illinois football head coach
Chris Wilkerson finishing sixth in voting for this year's Eddie Robinson FCS Coach of the Year Award presented by FedEx Ground with the winner announced on Thursday morning (Dec. 7).
Wilkerson engineered one of the best turnarounds in the FCS this season guiding the Panthers from 2-9 in his first season in 2022 to an 8-3 record this season.
Â
He was named the inaugural Big South-OVC Football Association Coach of the Year this season in just his second season guiding his alma mater.
Â
The Panthers were listed as one of the last four teams left out of this year's FCS playoffs after winning their fourth straight game with a road win at Robert Morris to close out the regular season.
Â
EIU was ranked No. 24 in the final AFCA FCS Coaches Top 25 poll earlier today marking the 18th time in school history the program has been nationally ranked.
Â
Wilkerson is the third EIU head coach to be a finalist for the Robinson Award. Bob Spoo was a four-time finalist finishing as high as second in the voting in 2000.  Dino Babers was a two-time finalist and the runner-up for the award in 2013.
The announcement comes a day after running back
MJ Flowers was named the runner-up for this year's Jerry Rice Award presented to the nation's top FCS freshman.
