EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Eastern Illinois men's tennis came up just short in its final match of the 2023 season as the Panthers lost 4-3 at Southern Indiana with the overall match coming down to the final two singles contests.
EIU opened up winning the doubles point taking two of the three matches. After USI won at No. 1 doubles the Panthers rallied to win at No. 2 and 3 doubles.Â
Pau Riera and
Antonio Ayerbe Streubel won 6-4 at No. 3 doubles to square the doubles. Â
Tyler Carlin and
Alex Dinkov then won the point for EIU with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
USI would then go up 3-1 in the match with three straight wins in singles play with victories at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 singles.Â
Alex Dinkov stopped the Screaming Eagles run with a three-set win for EIU at No. 4 singles making the overall match score 3-2. Dinkov won 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 (12-10).Â
The final two matches of the day then came down to three sets each. USI clinched the overall match with a win at No. 5 singles before
Tyler Carlin captured the final point for EIU at No. 3 singles. Carlin won 6-3, 6-7 (6-8), 6-4.
EIU ends the season at 5-15 overall, 1-9 in the Horizon League.
