CHARLESTON, Ill. - The EIU volleyball team defeated Louisiana Monroe 3-0 in their opening match of the 2023 campaign. The final set scores were as follows: 25-22, 25-13, and 25-17. The victory started the Panthers' season out on a high note that they will look to build on heading into their final two matchups of the Panther Classic.
Offensively, EIU was led by Giovana Larregui Lopez, who powered her way to 17 kills with a .556 hitting percentage.
Natalie Mitchem (9) and
Kaitlyn Flynn (7) also made their presence felt, combining for 16 kills. The Panthers' attack was set up by
Catalina Rochaix, who accounted for 36 of the team's 40 assists. EIU recorded 11 total service aces, with five players contributing two each.
On defense,
Christina Martinez Mundo led the way with 17 digs. Eastern also compiled four and a half total blocks, with
Julia Stanev leading the team with three block assists. Mitchem and Rochaix also added two block assists of their own.
The ULM attack was led by Ariana Brown with 10 kills, while Bailey Roberson tallied a team-leading 15 assists. On defense, the Warhawks were led by Callie Humphrey with 10 digs.
Next up for Eastern is Valparaiso, who also won their first match in straight sets, at 7 p.m. in Lantz Arena.Â
