Women’s Soccer Celebrates Senior Day On Sunday

Charleston, Ill - On a sunny afternoon of celebrations at Lakeside Field, Eastern Illinois women's soccer wraps up non-conference play fighting hard until the last minute, but ends the day defeated by Chicago State, 2-1. The Panthers sit at a 1-4-2 record while the Cougars move to a 2-5 on their season.
 
The match started with EIU aggressive on the attack half. In the 4th minute of the game, Abby Reinl found Zenaya Barnes with a pass in behind the Cougars defense. Barnes then found the back of the net with a right foot diagonal finish to give the Panthers the early 1-0 lead. In the 13th minute of the match, the Cougars took advantage of one of its few opportunities with Daliisha Spence scoring the equalizing goal. The Panthers kept pressing the visitors as EIU finished the half with seven shots, but were unable to score.
 
In the second half, the game became more balanced as both teams were looking for the win. In the 74th minute, Gisselle Sahagun found the goal that would give the Cougars the 2-1 lead. EIU kept fighting for the equalizing goal until the last minute as Zanaya Barnes had a shot saved by the Cougar's defense on the goal line. The Panthers finished the game with one player down as a red card was given to EIU in the 80th minute of the match.
 
Goalkeepers Lexi Prusow and Ella Kratochvil recorded one save each as the Panthers rotated goalkeepers at halftime.
 
EIU outshot Chicago State 10-5.
 
Prior to the start of the match, EIU honored the service eight seniors: Peyton Gill, Cami Lummus, Serra Pizano, Ava Hensley, Nyah Biegler, Karima Rangel, Cam Korhorn, and Lexi Prusow.
 
Up next: EIU will have eleven days to prepare for its conference opener as the Panthers host SIUE on Thursday, Sept. 21st.
