GAME 3
Eastern Illinois continues its early season swing against the Big Ten Conference as the Panthers will play the second of three Big Ten teams over the first four games of the season. EIU lost its season opener at nationally ranked Illinois. The Panthers bounced back with a 97-61 win over Earlham College on Wednesday night in their home opener to stand at 1-1 on the season. EIU now faces its second nationally ranked opponent with a trip to No. 17 Indiana on Sunday. The Hoosiers are 1-0 after a win over SIUE on Wednesday.
STAPLETON LEADS SIX PANTHERS IN SCORING
Artese Stapleton led six Eastern Illinois players into double figure scoring on Wednesday in the home win over Earlham College. Stapleton scored a team-high 16 points going 6-of-10 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line. In addition Stapleton helped some his teammates reach that double digit total as he passed out eight of the Panthers 16 assists in the win. Stapleton is in his sixth year of NCAA basketball after receiving a medical redshirt at Kansas City last season. He has now scored 1,250 career collegiate points.
CURTIS WITH EARLY SEASON LIFT OFF THE BENCH
Transfer guard
Obadiah Curtis redshirted last season as a member of an Arkansas State team that reached the CBI Tournament. His last collegiate action was at the junior college level in 2002-23 averaging 19.7 points per game at Reedley College. In his first game in an Eastern Illinois uniform Curtis came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down five rebounds at No. 24 Illinois. He reached double figures for the second straight game on Wednesday with 13 points, five rebounds and three blocks off the bench against Earlham College.
POINTS ON THE BOARD
Eastern Illinois scored 97 points on Wednesday in its home opener against Earlham College. It marked the second straight year EIU has scored 90 or more points in its home opener after scoring 91 against Monmouth (Ill.) last season. It was the most points for EIU in a home opener since the 2019-20 season with 98 against Chicago State. On the flip side the 112 points given up by EIU in the opener at Illinois was the first time EIU let an opponent crack the century mark since Dec. 21, 2018, when Iowa State scored 101 against the Panthers in Ames, Iowa.
