Five Starters Score In Double Figures In OVC Opener

Panthers fall at SEMO 79-72

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – All five Eastern Illinois starters scored in double figures but the Panthers could not overcome a hot shooting start to the second half by Southeast Missouri falling to the Redhawks 79-72 at the Show Me Center.

EIU falls to 3-8 overall, 0-1 in the OVC.  SEMO improved to 5-6, 1-0 in the OVC.

EIU trailed by just three points at the half with SEMO leading 38-35. The Panthers had 11 points each in the opening half from Kooper Jacobi and Nakyel Shelton as they shot 50 percent from the field.

Hot shooting was the story for SEMO in the second half as the Redhawks opened the half 7-of-8 from the floor including 4-of-5 from 3-point range.

Teddy Washington Jr., was the star scoring 24 of game high 28 points in the second half including five 3-pointers.  Washington added ten rebounds.

EIU stayed in the contest with a dominating night on the glass.  The Panthers finished with a 34-24 advantage on the board.  EIU had 17 offensive rebounds leading to 17 second chance points. 

Jacobi led the Panthers rebounding charge pulling down 12.  He collected his fourth double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds.  Rodolfo Bolis just missed a double-double with ten points and nine rebounds.

Shelton led EIU with 17 points followed by Zion Fruster with 15  points and Malik Olafioye with ten.

The Panthers had five points off the bench with Carson Prost hitting a late second half 3-pointer and Lazar Grbovic ending the early second half Redhawks run with a lay-up.
