USI Beats EIU Women's Basketball Behind 4th Q Run

Macy McGlone ties school record with 19th double-double this season

Southern Indiana used a 13-0 run early in the fourth quarter to erase an Eastern Illinois lead to beat the Panthers 70-60 on Thursday night.

USI improved to 15-6 overall, 10-1 in the OVC.   EIU fell to 9-15 overall, 6-5 in the OVC.

Macy McGlone tied the EIU school record for double-doubles in a season with her 19th as she finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

EIU led 36-30 at the half as Taris Thornton scored the last five points of the half for the Panthers finishing with 12, one of three EIU players in double figures.

In the third quarter EIU pushed its lead out to eight points on several occasions, the last with 5 minutes left in the quarter on a Ellie Buzzelle 3-pointer.   Buzzelle knocked down four 3-pointers scoring 17 points.

Back-to-back buckets by Madison Webb for USI tied the game at 45-45 with 1:20 left in the third quarter.  McGlone closed out the quarter for EIU as they led 49-47 after three.

In the fourth quarter EIU went up 50-47 before the Screaming Eagles ran off the 13-0 run to take the lead for the remainder of the game.  Vanessa Shafford had back-to-back baskets for USI to give them the lead at 51-50 with 9:01 to play in the game.  

USI would hit nine straight shots as part of the run shooting 69 percent for the quarter.  Webb had 15 points and Shafford 13 for the Eagles.   Meredith Raley led all USI players with 22 points.
