Baseball Closes First Weekend Of OVC Play

Panthers fall to SEMO in seven innings

CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Eastern Illinois baseball team (5-16, 0-3 OVC) closed out their series against Southeast Missouri (12-13, 3-0 OVC) on Sunday with a 15-4 loss in seven innings.

Like in the series' first two games, SEMO jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first inning, this time by way of a Ty Stauss two RBI double and Caleb Corbin RBI triple.

Bryce Cannon then homered in the second before a pair of EIU fielding errors in the third allowed SEMO to push four unearned runs across to go up 8-0.

The Redhawks ended up extending their lead to 13-0 before a Luke Melton bases loaded triple in the sixth inning brought in three runs for the Panthers. A Danny Infante sacrifice fly advanced Melton home to temporarily stave off the 10-run rule.

However, SEMO scored two runs on a bases loaded walk and wild pitch in the top of the seventh to go up by 11, and after EIU failed to respond in their next at-bat, the game was called.

Jonathon Hanscom (0-1) suffered the loss in his first career start, while Sam Heyman (2-0) picked up the win after throwing five scoreless innings.

Slater Wilcox worked through another scoreless frame with an inning of relief work in the sixth.

At the plate, Dylan Drumke extended his hitting streak with a lead-off single in the first while Luke Melton's three RBIs were the first of his career.

The Panthers next test will be on the road at UT Martin. The series is scheduled for March 28-30, with game one set for 5 p.m.
