The Panthers were unable to find their rhythm on the road at USI, dropping both matches 3-0. EIU falls to 8-6 (2-2 OVC), while the Eagles move to 6-10 (2-2 OVC).
Set One: After dropping match one on Friday, EIU looked to start quickly; however, both teams would play a close set with the score tied 10-10 to begin. The Eagles would use a 3-0 and 4-0 scoring run to take the first real lead of the match, 19-13. EIU would fall 21-14, using a late timeout to talk things over. Unfortunately, the break in action was unable to stop the momentum, with Southern Indiana extending their lead to 23-15. The Panthers attempted a late comeback but fell short, dropping the set 25-19.
Set Two: The second set would go the distance, but Southern Indiana would hold EIU at arm's length early on, leading 13-8. Eastern Illinois would respond by scoring five unanswered points to tie the set at 13 apiece. Both teams took turns scoring until the Eagles scored four straight to take a 20-16 lead. Katie Kopshever would stop the bleeding with a kill off the assist from Catalina Rochaix. After Southern Indiana extended their lead to 23-18 with the set in their hands, Eastern Illinois charged a late comeback, scoring four straight points and forcing a USI timeout. EIu would take a late 24-23 but was unable to hold on, dropping set two 27-25.
Set Three: The Panthers down two sets, opening the third set with a 13-8 lead by Arianda Pereles, Lilli Amettis, and Destiny Walker. The Eagles responded with a 5-0 scoring run to tie the set, forcing an EIU timeout. The Panthers would respond with a quick scoring run of their own with three unanswered. As the set moved along, Southern Indiana went on another 5-0 scoring run to take an 18-16 lead. With the match coming to an end, the Panthers tried to provide resistance with kills by Tori Mohesky and Emma Schroeder. Unfortunately, the Panthers were unable to overcome the deficit, losing 25-12.
By The Numbers: Katie Kopshever led the game with 12 kills, followed by Lilli Amettis and Destiny Walker, each contributing 10 apiece. Catalina Rochaix led the game with 33 assists, and Ariadna Pereles earned the top spot with 23 digs.
As a team, the Panthers totaled 42 kills, 37 assists, 69 digs, and 5 blocks.
The Panthers will be back in action on October 14th on the road against Western Illinois.
