Eastern Illinois and Southeast Missouri battled each other as much as they did Mother Nature on Thursday afternoon before SEMO eventually walked away with a 2-1 win at Lakeside Field.
Â
Due to expected late afternoon thunderstorms, the start time was moved up to a 1:30 pm kick. Ten minutes into the first half, the game was halted for just over 50 minutes due to lightning in the area. Â
Â
The Redhawks struck first in the contest that was played through a steady rain and drizzle all day making for a wet pitch surface. Maci Hatzenbuehler sent home a shot to the lower corner on an assist from Riley Henderson in the 20th minute.
Â
SEMO went up 2-0 in the match in the 56th minute with a foul called in the box resulting in a penalty kick, successfully converted by Chloe Ouimet.
Â
EIU continued to fight in the match finishing with ten total shots including three shots on goal. The Panthers did break through in the 80th minute with
Alex Tetteh finishing off a corner kick sent in by
Amara Leppla.
Â
The Panthers could not find that final equalizing goal falling to 4-6-3 overall, 2-2 in the OVC. Leppla and
Amelia Mundo joined Tetteh with EIU shots on goal.
Â
SEMO improved to 4-6-4 on the season, 3-0-1 in the OVC.
