GAME 2
Eastern Illinois continues its early season road swing against Power Conference opponents as the Panthers play on Friday evening at Iowa. EIU lost its season opener at Indiana on Monday and will travel to ACC member Notre Dame next Monday. EIU opens with five of its first seven games against teams from the ACC, Big Ten and SEC. The Panthers home opener is November 11 against Blackburn College. Iowa beat Lipscomb in its season opener.
BURTON REACHES DOUBLE FIGURES IN DIVISION 1 DEBUT
Demar Burton helped clear the glass as both a rebounder and shot blocker playing last season at NCAA Division II Tiffin University. Burton led the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in blocked shot with 36 while pulling down 5.8 rebounds per game. He spent his first two seasons playing at the junior college level averaging 11.2 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. He ranked second in NJCAA Region 14 in blocked shots. On Monday in the opener at Indiana, Burton was the lone EIU player to reach double figures as he scored ten points going 4-of-8 from the floor. As a team EIU shot 50 percent for the game going 25-of-50.
VOGEL WITH A BALANCED EFFORT
Tanner Vogel, a 7'0" center from Busselton, Australia, is in some rare company at Eastern Illinois as he is listed among the tallest players to ever play for the Panthers. The last 7'0" player for EIU was Kevin Duckworth who went on to be a multiple time NBA All-Star with the Portland Trailblazers. Vogel was a first team All-Conference selection last season at Faulker State University averaging a double-double for the NAIA program at 11.4 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Vogel finished with eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and a block at Indiana.
NTAMBWE ADDS SECOND HALF OFFENSE
Daniel Ntambwe comes to Eastern Illinois as a consistent rebounder during his two seasons playing at Coffeyville CC. He was rated a Top 100 JUCO player in the nation by JUCORecruiting.com after ranking in the top ten in rebounding in the Kansas Jayhawk League both seasons. He averaged 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds as a sophomore after posting averages of 8.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game as a freshman. In the opener at Indiana he picked up two early fouls but responded with eight points in the second half pulling down three rebounds.
DID YOU KNOW
Eastern Illinois win over Iowa in December 2022 was one of four wins the Panthers have all-time against Power Conference opponents. As an NCAA Division I member EIU has collected wins over Missouri (Dec. 2017) and Wisconsin (Dec. 1987). As an NCAA Division II member making the transition from the NAIA ranks, EIU beat Ole Miss in December 1974.
