Biography


2012-13:  Ended his Panther career with a 6-9 singles record, playing all but one match at the top of the EIU lineup... also sported an even 6-6 mark at No. 1 doubles alonside classmate Warren Race.

2011-12:  Struggled a bit during his sophomore campaign behind a 1-16 singles record, including 0-11 mark at the No. 1 spot... owned a 4-11 No. 1 duo record when teamed with departing senior Matyas Hilgert.

2010-11:  Went 2-15 in singles as a true freshman... saw action mostly at the top spot of the lineup... recorded a 1-6 OVC record... notched a 5-11 doubles record, including a 2-5 mark... played a majority of the season at No. 2 duos with Charlie Dryden.

HS: Attended Oak Ridge High School in Gold River, Cal. before going to American River Junior College in Sacramento… played high school tennis baseball and football… won Division II individual district tournament in junior season… named all-conference by The Sacramento Bee.

PERSONAL: A business management major… son of Cindy & Zel Sperry… number one sports moment is being ranked 48th in northern California for boys 18s and 16s… biggest influence on his sports career has been his father, “because he has driven me in every sport to do my best and achieve as much as I can... actually, both my mother and father have supported me my whole sports career”… his most admired athlete is Marat Safin, “because he is an all-around great athlete and competitor”… his sister, Jenny, played tennis at the University of San Francisco and his brother, Bill, plays at Sonoma State University.

OFF THE COURT WITH MICHAEL: People on the squad nicknamed him “Pecha”… chose to come to EIU “because of the opportunity to play for a big DI college”… a former EIU athlete that he likes to watch perform most is Tony Romo… besides sports, he loves to play Texas Hold ‘em poker… favorite food is a prairie dog at Cattlemen’s but he doesn’t like spaghetti… favorite musical artist is 50 Cent… favorite movie is Anchorman… favorite actor is Will Ferrell… if he could, he would like to switch places with Terrell Owens for a day, “because he is an exceptional athlete and leads an awesome life”… since coming to EIU he has learned that “life is what you make of it”… advice he’d to share with younger athletes is “you have to put in the time to get the results”… if he could bring one thing from with him to EIU it would be his X-Box 36.
