Greg Peterson

Greg Peterson brings a wealth of experience to the Eastern Illinois coaching staff as he was oversee the Panthers wide receiver corps.
 
Peterson is a veteran coach with more than 30 years of experience including three stops as an offensive coordinator at the FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision) level.  He was most recently the offensive coordinator at Tulsa helping the program win the 2012 Conference USA Championship while appearing in two bowls games.   Tulsa won the 2012 Independence Bowl and appeared in the 2011 Armed Forces Bowl.  As the offensive coordinator, Peterson coached 18 all-conference players with two wide receivers later playing in the National Football League and Canadian Football League.
 
In 2010 he had a one year stop as the offensive coordinator at FCS member Northern Colorado.  Peterson made an immediate impact during his one season directing the offense with five All-Conference players, the highest point total and most rushing yards in the school’s FCS history.
 
He worked two seasons as the offensive coordinator at Colorado State from 2008-09 while also working with the wide receivers.  He had two receivers later play in the NFL as the Rams were the 2008 New Mexico Bowl Champions.
 
Peterson coached two seasons at Washington State serving as the Cougars tight ends coach.  He had three tight ends later play in the NFL with one representing WSU in the East-West Shrine Game.
 
His longest stint as a college coach was on Bill Synder’s staff at Kansas State helping the Wildcats to a successful run in the Big 12 Conference from 1994-2005.  The team appeared in ten bowls including two appearances in the Fiesta Bowl (1997 & 2004) and two appearances in the Cotton Bowl (1996 & 2001).  While on the Wildcats staff Peterson served in a variety of roles including co-offensive coordinator, wide receiver coach, passing game coordinator and kickoff return coordinator.  He recruited 20 players that would have NFL careers and coached 14 wide receivers that played in the NFL.  A total of eight wide receivers earned All-American honors during his time at Kansas State.   The Wildcats won the 2003 Big 12 Championship with Peterson on the staff and took home the Big 12 North Division crown in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2003.
 
Peterson began his coaching career at Nebraska Wesleyan in 1984 as the wide receivers coach.  After one year at York High School in Nebraska, he returned to Nebraska Wesleyan for the 1986 season.  Peterson served the offensive coordinator, quarterback coach and wide receiver coach at Eastern Oregon from 1987-1991 where he coached current EIU offensive coordinator Greg Stevens.  He then spent two years on the staff at Idaho coaching running backs and wide receivers.  He helped the Vandals make two straight FCS playoff appearances with two wide receivers and one running back later playing in the NFL.
 
During his long career Peterson has coached 20 players that have gone on to play in the NFL and ten wide receivers that have been candidates for the prestigious Biletnikoff Award.
 
Peterson played football and basketball at Nebraska Wesleyan earning All-Conference in both sports.  He was an All-American in football and played one season in the USFL for the Houston Gamblers.  He has a bachelor’s degree from Nebraska Wesleyan and a master’s degree from Eastern Oregon.
