Biography
2011-12: Went 7-5 in singles during his final season as a Panther, which included a 3-1 OVC mark... saw action mostly at the No. 3 spot... 5-11 on the year in doubles, including a 4-11 record at the top of the duo lineup alongside Michael Sperry.
2010-11: Notched a 5-12 singles record, playing mostly at No. 3, but also saw some play at the second spot... went 2-5 in OVC matchups... 1-15 duo mark where he was teamed with Jamie Firth at the top of the doubles lineup.
2009-10: Finished with a 6-13 singles mark where he saw action at No. 2 thru No. 6 spots in the lineup... went 2-5 in league play... sported a 3-13 doubles mark, with a majority of play seen at the No. 2 spot alongside Warren Race.
2008-09: Spent the majority of the season playing No. 4 singles, posting a 8-15 clip for the year... finished 8-11 in doubles play including a 7-4 record with partner Jeff Rutherford.. four straight wins in the middle of the season... won three out of four conference matches in the middle of the season...
HS: Matyas played summer tennis for SK Oars Praha in Prague... and was a quarterfinalist at the ITF....
PERSONAL: A business management major... son of Ivan Hilgert & Marcela Hilgertova.... credits his parents for influencing his playing career, “because they have supported me both financially and psychologically”...
OFF THE COURT WITH MATYAS: 'Mathewson' chose EIU "because I got a great chance to play for a Division I school and I took it"... feels some advantages EIU has over other schools include "the size of the classes and that I am able to walk to all of them within 10 minutes"... also enjoys snowboarding, kiteboarding, windsurfing, soccer, and ice hockey... has a special talent of drawing and graphic design... enjoys eating peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti with ketchup and cheese, and cereal with milk, but dislikes dining on mushrooms, sushi or whatever should be cooked, but isn't... favorite tv show is The Big Bang Theory... his family owns two dogs named 'Tchenda' and 'Lea'... recently enjoyed taking Cameron Craig's Weather and Climate class... since coming to EIU he's learned "to take responsibility, because taking English classes in high school doesn't mean you can speak English"... his advice to a younger athlete would be "to avoid taking 16 or more credit hours in a spring semester"... some of his goals while at EIU include "wanting to contribute to a successful year with our young tennis team in the next few seasons... and after that I want to get involved in my parents' business."
