Eastern Illinois men's basketball head coach
Jay Spoonhour announced the signing of Shareef Smith to a National Letter of Intent as the NCAA early signing period came to close last week.

Smith is entering his second season at Highland Community College in Illinois sitting out last season on a team coached by current EIU assistant coach
Tone Boyle. Smith has opened this season averaging 12 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists.  Prior to playing at HCC, Smith played the 2015-16 season at Pensacola State College averaging 9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. He scored a season high 34 points against Gulf Coast State College knocking down seven 3-pointers.Â

Shareef is from Madison, Wis., where he was a fourth-team All-State selection as a senior at Madison Memorial High School. He averaged 15.3 points, four rebounds and four assists per game earning Big Eight Conference Player of the Year honors.
