Biography


2012:  Starting catcher in 30 games as a junior... her .232 batting mark set a new career mark... her 22 hits included six doubles and a pair of home runs... that included her first career grand slam as EIU clawed past OVC rival Murray State at home... also had a solo shot in EIU's road win at league champion UTM... had four multiple hit and a pair of multi-RBI contests... enjoyed a three-game hitting streak at one point... assisted on a pair of pick-offs at first base... gunned down a trio of opponents attempting to steal second... OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll, including Medalist honors.

2011:  Played in 26 games, earning 19 starts at catcher and five as designated hitter... hit .204 for the season behind 11 hits... touched home plate nine times... nailed three doubles and earned four RBI... only struck out eight times and walked seven... earned 118 putouts and 13 assists when catching... earned two pickoffs and threw-up six runners trying to steal a base... had one multi-hit and multi-RBI games... also enjoyed a three-game hitting streak at one point in the season... twice actually touched home for the winning run, first against Houston Baptist and again versus OVC foe TSU... OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll.

2010: Played in 40 games as a true freshman, which included 14 starts as catcher and eight more as the designated hitter... placed in the last part of the batting order where she finished with a .204 batting average as she recorded 10 hits... crossed the plate 10 times... nailed a double and two home runs as well while walking just once... was one of six different Panthers to crush the ball over the fence as EIU cruised past OVC rival SEMO, setting a single-season school and league record in the process... ended up with a seven RBI season... went 2-for-4 in stolen bases... defensively, she assisted in throwing out five base runners who attempted to steal a base... finished the season with zero passed balls... notched 11 total assists while aiding in 57 total put-outs on the year... tallied four sacrifice bunts while also bringing home a Panther run via a sacrifice fly.

HS: Played four-year softball and volleyball at Shelbyville HS for coaches Rob Young, Gary Roberts & Teri Anderson... a three-time Shelbyville News County ‘Player of the Year’... set a number of school marks while at Shelbyville, including nothing season and career records her senior year for hits, stolen bases, triples, and defensive average... three-time all-conference honoree, setting the career league mark for doubles... twice elected team captain in her junior & senior seasons... named ‘Rookie of the Year’... Stanley Jones Insurance MVP as junior & senior... Kiwanis ‘Athlete of the Year’ in 2009... named to Honor Roll and earned all-conference academic honors four years, while finishing in the Top 10 of her class all through high school and elected senior class president... played summer league softball for Midland Magic 18U, which won the 2008 ASA State title.

PERSONAL: Majoring in nursing... daughter of Jeff & Maggie Wood... her top sports moment was “being named ‘Co-Player of the Year’ alongside my sister, Ashley”... credits her parents for influencing her athletic career, “because they have always backed me 110% no what... they have also put about as much time into the sport of softball as I have”... her uncle, Jeff Hauteman, played college ball at Vincennes University and Triple A ball for the Milwaukee Brewers.

OFF THE FIELD WITH ABBY:  'A-Dub' chose chose EIU “because I liked the size of the school... everyone is really friendly here... and I definitely enjoy my teammates and coaches”... her favorite foods are chocolate chip pancakes... her advise to a young athlete would be “hustle and give it your all, all the time... respect your teammates and learn from them”... for one day, she'd like to trade places with “my parents, because I appreciate everything they do for me.. but I actually knew everything they did for me and my sister it would be on another level”... one of her favorite quotes (unknown) is “never let success go to your head ... never let failure get to your heart”... currently driving a 2002 Black Grand Am... since coming to to EIU she's learned “that you need to cherish every person in your life and the impact they have made on it”... her goals at EIU are “to get a good education, so that I’m successful in life post-graduation as I want to have a stable career once I get my degree.”
