Obe Eruteya from the men's track and field Rachel Galligan from the women's basketball team have been named the Eastern Illinois student-athletes of the month for January 2008. Each month during the school year one male and female student-athlete will be recognized for their outstanding performance in their sport.
Eruteya, a senior jumper from Chicago, was twice named the OVC track athlete of the week based on his performances in the triple jump. Eruteya recently placed first at the Illinois Invitational in the triple jump while he holds the best mark in the OVC in that event this year. Eruteya also competes in the long jump and high jump.
Galligan, a junior forward from Bloomington, Ill., has been a key part of the Panthers surge to first place in the OVC basketball standings. Galligan averaged 23.2 points and 6.4 rebounds during January as EIU posted a 7-2 record. Galligan also hit 62.6 percent from the floor while earning two OVC player of the week awards.
