CONWAY, Ark. - After four straight 1-0 matches not going their way, Eastern Illinois was able to get the ball to bounce in its favor on Wednesday afternoon as the Panthers picked up a 1-0 win over Central Arkansas in Conway, Ark.
Ryan Child was able to knock home the game winner on a header in the 33rd minute as he connected from five yards out off a cross by Ian McCausland. Child's goal was the second of the season for the junior midfielder from England.
With the win EIU improved to 4-7 on the season, 1-2 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Panthers also improved to 3-0 all-time against Central Arkansas. UCA fell to 3-8 overall, 0-2 in the MVC.
EIU out shot UCA 11-9 with five shots on goal for the Panthers. Sean Molony collected his fourth shutout of the season as the keeper stopped both Bears shots on goal.
EIU opened the second half with an onslaught of shots. Zach Piekarski had a chance to add an insurance goal in the final eight minutes but his header was stopped by Bears goalkeeper Greg Brooks.
The match was delayed for 30 minutes just after the start of the second half due to lighting in the area.
The Panthers will play their next two contests at Lakeside Field with a 2 p.m. Saturday match with SIU Edwardsville and a 2:30 p.m. match with Bradley next Wednesday.
