CHARLESTON, Ill. – The upperclassmen had an advantage in possession and scoring chances, but
Brandon Loncar capitalized on a defender losing his footing in the early seconds of overtime and scored the lone goal, lifting the underclassmen to a 1-0 victory in Eastern Illinois men's soccer's intrasquad game Sunday afternoon.
The upperclassmen enjoyed a 10-5 edge in shots and 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Underclassmen goalkeepers
Shailer Thomas and
Tyler Kelley teamed up to make five saves. Both 'keepers made a key save above their heads to keep the game scoreless.
“I'm really happy with the progress,” EIU head coach
Adam Howarth said. “The passing was good, the movement was good. Now we just have to put the ball in the back of the net. That's the next job. We did a great deal of work in the spring working on formations. And just playing crisper, having more of an edge to your game. I think they did a much better job of that today than they did earlier in the week.”
Jerry Maddi connected a pass to Loncar shortly after the kickoff of the five-minute overtime period. Loncar was able to advance the ball into a scoring position on the left side of the goal and buried the game-winner into the lower right corner of the net. The golden goal came only 12 seconds into overtime.
Thomas reached up and snared a shot by
Alex Harrison in the 14th minute, bailing out his defensive teammates after a giveaway in front of the 18-yard box. Kelley made his key save in the 33rd minute when he punched
Jonathan Hinds' rising blast from the right flank over the top of the crossbar.
Grey Genenbacher also had a quality scoring chance for the upperclassmen in the 42nd minute but missed wide of the left post with a right-to-left ground shot across the 18-yard box.
The Panthers continue their exhibition season Tuesday when they travel to Indianapolis for a 4 p.m. (CDT) friendly at Butler
