INDIANAPOLIS – Eastern Illinois men's soccer led twice thanks to goals from Alex Harrison and Shawn Singh, but had to settle for a 2-2 draw with Horizon League preseason favorite Butler in a 105-minute exhibition friendly Tuesday afternoon.
Harrison opened the scored in the 29th minute with a goal off an assist from Alex Koch. Koch served it into the box and Harrison re-directed it into the left corner of the net. That goal gave EIU the lead until Butler tied it in the 43rd minute on a header goal by Tyler Pollock.
Singh put the Panthers back in front with a go-ahead goal off an assist from Cameron Lauchner in the 82nd minute. Singh controlled Lauchner's left-to-right cross in front of the goal and blasted a shot past the Butler goalkeeper. But the Bulldogs tied the match three minutes later on a score from Blake Leyden and it ended deadlocked.
“It was a quality performance that I was pretty happy with,” EIU head coach Adam Howarth said. “I thought our finishing was good and we had a couple other chances to score. They had a lot of possession and chances as well. But it was a massive improvement from the first [exhibition] game and intrasquad. And that's what we've got to keep doing, improving with every game. Butler is going to be a good team again this year. So far I'm happy with how we're doing this preseason.”
Both teams were credited with 11 shots. All three EIU goalkeepers – Sean Molony, Tyler Kelley and Shailer Thomas – saw action. Molony started and played the first half. Kelley and Thomas split time in the 60-minute second half. Molony was credited with one save and Kelley two.
Due to a power outage at the Butler Bowl, complete stats will not be available.
The Panthers conclude their exhibition schedule Saturday when they host Green Bay at noon. The Phoenix were picked a close second to Butler in the Horizon League preseason poll and also participated in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Eastern kicks off its regular season Friday, Sept. 3 at the University of Kentucky.
