MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois opened the second half with a 10-0 run as the Leathernecks snapped Eastern Illinois three-game win streak with a 64-48 win on Saturday night in Western Hall.
WIU improved to 4-3. EIU fell to 6-3. The home team has now won nine of the last ten meetings in the series. The exception was EIU's win in Western Hall in 2009-10.
Ceola Clark knocked down six 3-pointers in the second half as he opened WIU's run. Clark finished with 18 points hitting 6-of-7 from beyond the arc on the night. Obi Emegano finished the run at the 14:46 mark with WIU leading 33-25.
Morris Woods ended WIU's run with a bucket after the Panthers missed their first seven shots of the second half. EIU shot 35 percent in the half and 38 percent for the game. EIU closed to 36-33 with 11:15 left in the game as
Joey Miller hit a 3-pointer.
Clark responded for WIU and the Leathernecks stretched the lead to as high 21 points. The Leathernecks converted 15 EIU turnovers into 17 points. WIU only turned the ball over five times.
Eastern Illinois opened the game cold from the field hitting one of its first ten shots, that coming on a
L.C. Doss 3-pointer in the first 30-seconds. WIU would build a six point lead several times in the half as Obi Emegano had ten first half points. Emegano had 14 for the game.
The Panthers would hit 8 of their remaining 12 shots in the half to finish shooting 41 percent for the half.
Josh Piper capped a 6-0 EIU run that tied that game at 18-18 with 4:27 left in the half.
Jeremy Granger hit a runner in the lane with six seconds left to put EIU up 25-23 at the break.
Granger was the lone EIU player to reach double figures finishing with 18 points. Miller added nine. Terrell Parks of WIU led all scorers with 19 points.
EIU returns to action next Sunday, Dec. 18 when the Panthers play at Northwestern in a 5 p.m. contest in Evanston.
