CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay handed Eastern Illinois a 65-56 loss on Thursday night at the Dunn Center in Clarksville, Tenn.
The Panthers (9-20, 4-14 OVC) took their only lead of the game, 36-35, with 14:43 left in the game on a
Jeremy Granger basket as EIU started the second half on an 11-2 run. The Governors (18-12, 12-5 OVC) regained the lead on the following possession and used a 14-4 run to take 51-40 advantage at the 8:35 mark. EIU got within six (53-47) with 5:23 left in the game, but Austin Peay closed the game on a 12-9 run.
EIU trailed by 10 (33-23) at the half, shooting 28 percent from the floor (9-for-32). Austin Peay shot 47 percent from the floor (15-for-32) in the first half.
The first half only saw the two teams combine for one free throw attempt. The Governors finished the contest 15-for-22 from the foul line as EIU went 5-for-7. Granger was the only Panther to make it to the charity stripe.
Granger paced the Panthers with 15 points as he was 4-for-9 from the floor and 2-for-2 from behind the arc.
James Hollowell added 13 points and three assists while
Curry McKinney chipped in 12 points and two assists.
Defensively,
Shaun Pratl had a team-high 10 rebounds and three blocks. Hollowell chipped in two blocks and recorded two steals in the loss.
EIU was out rebounded by 10 (48-38) and committed one more turnover (15-14) than Austin Peay.
The Panthers shot 35 percent from the floor (22-for-63) and connected on 35 percent of their shots from behind the arc (5-for-12).
Caleb Brown and John Fraley paced Austin Peay as they both scored 14 points. Fraley also had 10 rebounds for a double-double. Tyshwan Edmondson also posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
EIU concludes its season at Tennessee State on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m.
