CONWAY, Ark. – Freshman
Jake Brillhart scored two goals, including the game winner in overtime, to lift the Eastern Illinois men's soccer team over Central Arkansas, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon. EIU improves to 4-0 all-time against the Bears.
“He stepped up big for us today,” said Eastern Illinois head coach Adam Howarth on Brillhart. “He hit a great strike right over the keeper's head in overtime to pick up the game winner for us.”
Tied at two heading into overtime, Brillhart gave the Panthers their second win of the season in the 99th minute when he hit a shot from the corner of the six-yard box over the UCA goalkeeper who came out grab the ball that was played from
Ryan Child. EIU has gone to overtime in all three of its matches this year.
The match remained scoreless until the 59th minute when Brillhart scored his first collegiate goal from 16 yards out off a cross from classmate
Will Butler. Another newcomer,
Chris Boswell, netted his first goal with the Panthers when he headed the ball into the back of the net from nine yards out off a cross from
Jake Irwin to give EIU the 2-0 advantage.
The Bears (1-1) fought back and scored two goals in less than a minute to eventually send the match into overtime. UCA's Daylon Schiffel scored at the 78:47 mark to get the Bears within one before Stephen Williams scored the equalizer at the 79:20 mark.
“Before the game I told the players we had to take care of business today and we had to get the job done,” said Howarth. “We should have put the game away late in the match, but a win is a win.”
The Panthers took four more shots (11-7) than the Bears and took three more shots on goal (7-4). EIU took one more corner kick (5-4) than UCA and had one less foul (15-14) in the match.
Evan Turner made two saves and allowed two goals between the pipes for the Panthers while Patxi Shortsleeve surrendered three goals and made four saves.
EIU returns to action when they travel to Evansville, Ill., for the Pro Rehab Services Tournament on Sept. 9-11.
