EIU Snaps Four-Game Losing Skid, Beats SIUE

Panthers improve to 1-1 in the OVC with 73-59 win

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Alfonzo McKinnie led Eastern Illinois in the first half.  Joey Miller led EIU in the second half.  At the end of the night EIU snapped a four-game losing streak as they won at SIU Edwardsville, 73-59.

EIU improved to 7-6 on the season and 1-1 in the OVC.  SIUE fell to 4-8, 2-1 in the OVC.

Miller finished with 24 points as four EIU players finished game in double figures.  Miller's 3-pointer at the 8:21 mark of the second half put EIU up by 21 points as the Panthers were 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.  L.C. Doss was 3-of-4 with 13 points. 

SIUE closed the gap back to 14 points on a bucket by Mark Yelovich with 3:59 left but the Panthers were able to get ten points from Jeremy Granger down the stretch as he finished with 14. 

McKinnie scored 15 first half points as Eastern Illinois led 34-21 at the break.  EIU jumped out to a 5-0 lead behind a 3-pointer by L.C. Doss and jumper by Miller as the Panthers never trailed in the half.  McKinnie had 17 points in the game.

McKinnie scored his first bucket at the 12:04 mark and scored eight straight points for the Panthers as they extended the lead to double figures.  Another Doss 3-pointer at 3:35 put EIU up 31-17, its biggest lead of the half.

Both teams reached the bonus around the midway point of the half.  EIU was 10-of-12 from the line while SIUE was 11-of-19.  The Panthers finished the game 18-of-20 while the Cougars ended up shooting 16-of-25 from the stripe.

Zavier Sanders led the Panthers with 13 rebounds as EIU dominated play on the glass with a 37-23 rebound advantage.

Kris Davis led SIUE with 14 points, Yelovich added 12.

EIU returns to action on Saturday with a non-conference game at Houston Baptist with a 7 p.m. tip.
