The Panther men's soccer team plays host to non-conference foe Belmont in the team's home finale on Oct. 30. EIU is 3-12 on the year while the Bruins enter Tuesday's contest with a 5-8-2 record.
BELMONT SERIES HISTORY
The Panthers are 4-1 all-time against the Bruins, including a 1-0 mark at Lakeside Field. EIU head coach Adam Howarth is 2-1 all-time versus Belmont. Last season, the Panthers dropped a 3-0 contest at Belmont on Nov. 1.
PANTHER NOTES
• Sophomore
Tayron Martin scored his team-leading third goal of the season in the Panthers 3-2 overtime win against IPFW. Martin tied the match at one in the 13
th minute.
• Junior
Jake Plant scored two goals on Saturday, Oct. 27 in the Panthers home win over the Mastodons. Plant scored his first career goal in the 66
th minute before scoring the game winner with one second remaining in overtime.
• Senior
Evan Turner posted his first win of the season in goal against IPFW, making four saves and surrendering two goals. The Eugene, Ore., native has made 33 saves on the year while surrendering 16 goals.
• Sophomore
Jake Irwin posted his team-leading fifth assist of the season in the win against IPFW. He is currently tied for fourth in the Summit League in assists.
• For the second time in as many matches, the Panthers scored a goal with only one second remaining on the clock. Freshman
Nick Smith scored the game-tying goal with one second left in regulation at Oral Roberts on Oct. 20. Junior
Jake Plant scored the game-winning goal with one second left on the clock in overtime last Saturday against IPFW, giving EIU its first conference win of the year.
• The win over IPFW snapped the Panthers eight-match losing streak in Summit League action dating back to last season. EIU has posted a 2-9-1 since rejoining the Summit League in 2011.
• Panther head coach Adam Howarth has accumulated 89 career victories, the third most all-time in the career coaching charts at EIU.
• EIU has been eliminated from postseason play and will conclude regular-season action at Oakland on Nov. 3.
BACK TO THE SUMMIT LEAGUE: YEAR TWO
After participating in the Missouri Valley Conference from 1996-2010, the Panther men's soccer program rejoined the Summit League where they competed from 1983-95. Despite finishing last in the final Summit League standings in 2011, the Panthers look to build on the success they previously had in the conference.
EIU won a total of five Summit League titles from 1983-95 while compiling a 48-23-6 (.662) league record. The Panthers also had 40 players earn all-conference honors while in the league.
PANTHERS LOOK TO BUILD ON TRADITIONS
The Panther men's soccer program began in 1963 and started playing at the NAIA level before transitioning to where they currently play at the highest level of competition, the NCAA Division I level. EIU has had success throughout its history from capturing the 1969 NAIA Title to placing third at the NCAA Division I Tournament in 1981.
EIU has had 31 winning seasons since 1963, including 19 seasons with 10 or more victories. The Panthers have also produced 21 All-American men's soccer players and two Academic All-Americans.
