Miller Leads EIU To Second Straight Road Win

Panthers win at UT Martin, 74-71

MARTIN, Tenn. – Joey Miller scored a career high 28 points and Eastern Illinois swept an Ohio Valley Conference road trip for the first time since January 2001 as EIU won 74-71 on Saturday night at UT Martin.

EIU improved to 11-14 overall, 4-9 in the OVC.  EIU will host SIU Edwardsville on Wednesday at Lantz Arena.  UT Martin falls to 3-24, 0-14 in the OVC.

The Panthers altered their starting line-up and jumped out to a 10-2 run as Nick McFarlin had five early points.  McFarlin scored seven points in his second career start at EIU.

UT Martin was able to take the lead in the first half behind the play of freshman Myles Taylor who went to the line to knock down 11 free throws in the opening half.  Taylor's free throws at 8:12 gave UTM a 21-19 lead.

Josh Piper scored seven points off the bench following those Taylor free throws as EIU took a 40-33 lead into the locker room. 

Mike Liabo gave UTM its final lead of the game after knocking down three straight 3-pointers to lead 47-44 at 15:43.  Liabo had 14 points as UTM was 5-of-17 from beyond the arc for the night.

EIU responded with a 9-0 run of its own with James Hollowell scoring five points and Miller knocked down a 3-pointer.  Hollowell finished with nine points and eight rebounds off the bench.

The Panthers were on their way to a double digit win when Zavier Sanders hit a lay-up with 55 seconds left to put EIU up 70-59.  UTM narrowed the lead to 71-69 on an Omari Minor jumper with 21 seconds left.

Jeremy Granger was fouled and sank to two free throws to finish the game for EIU.  Granger finished with 12 points.   EIU was 25-of-33 from the free throw line for the game.  Miller was 12-of-16 from the free throw line.

UTM had four players in double figures with Taylor finishing with 24 points and 11 rebounds.  EIU shot 49 percent for the game, UTM shot 32 percent.
