CHARLESTON, Ill. – Senior
Kristin Germann posted a hat trick in the Panthers 3-2 overtime victory over Cleveland State, scoring her third goal in the 93
rd minute to give the Eastern Illinois women's soccer team its first win of the year. EIU improved to 1-3 on the season.
Germann's final goal came from two yards out on the left off a save from Viking goalkeeper Becca Coleman who knocked away a
Jessie Morgan shot from the right.
EIU posted the first goal of the match in the 30
th minute when Germann netted a penalty kick.
Caitlin Greene was fouled in the box on a corner kick by Valerie Stahl to set up the penalty kick. The Panthers took its 1-0 advantage into the locker room.
Only nine minutes into the second stanza, Cleveland State's Kelcey Fischer scored her first goal of the year from 25 yards out on the left. Vickie Havas also scored her first goal of the year when she put the Vikings ahead, 2-1, in the 74
th minute.
The Panthers responded less than minute later when Germann reentered the contest following the Vikings goal, finding the back of the net from four yards out on the right off a pass from
Samantha Roumayah.
EIU took six more shots (21-15) than Cleveland State, including two more shots on goal (8-6). The Panthers also took two more corner kicks (6-4) and committed three more fouls (11-8).
Germann paced the Panther offense with seven shots (three on goal) while
Meagan Radloff added three shots. Morgan, Roumayah and
Ashley Streid all contributed two shots.
Freshman
Emily Hinton (1-0) posted her first career victory between the pipes for EIU, making one save in the match's final 19 minutes. Starting goalkeeper
Jessica Taldone made three saves and surrendered two goals in 74 minutes of action.
Cleveland State also used two goalkeepers with Becca Coleman (0-1) recording the loss, allowing two goals and making one save in 48 minutes of play. Sarah Wood made four saves and allowed one goal, playing the entire first half.
Offensively, Jamie Avona led the Vikings with five shots (one on goal) while Shea Levi added three shots (one on goal).
EIU returns to action on Friday, Aug. 31 at Indiana State. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
