CHARLESTON, Ill. – The Panther women's soccer team dropped its season opener, 5-1, to Oakland University on Friday afternoon at Lakeside Field.

The Golden Grizzlies (1-0) took an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute on a goal by Abigail Haelewyn. Madison Carter scored her second career goal for the Panthers (0-1) in the 21st minute to tie the match off a corner kick by Allie Lakie.

Serena San Cartier scored the first of her two goals for Oakland in the 37th minute to give the Golden Grizzlies a 2-1 lead heading into intermission. Oakland added three second-half goals to seal the victory.

EIU took nine shots in the match, four on goal, paced by Meagan Radloff's three shots. Lauren Hoppensteadt and Carter both added two shots and one shot on goal.

Oakland took five more corner kicks (7-2) in the match while EIU committed one more foul (7-6). Kyla Kellerman and San Cartier led the Golden Grizzlies with six shots each.

Emily Hinton (0-1) made 10 saves in goal for the Panthers, logging all 90 minutes. Payj O'Shea made three saves in 90 minutes of action between the pipes for Oakland.

The Panthers return to action on Sunday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. as they travel to in-state foe Northern Illinois.
