Hawkins, Panthers Defeat Belmont in OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Sophomore Molly Hawkins scored her first career goal in the 92nd minute to give the Panther women's soccer team a 1-0 overtime victory over Belmont in their Ohio Valley Conference opener at E.S. Rose Park.
 
Hawkin's goal was set up off a corner kick by classmate Samantha Roumayah as the Panthers secured their first win of conference play. EIU improved to 1-9 overall and marked the first career win for head coach Jason Cherry.
 
The Bruins (2-5-1, 0-1 OVC) took 17 more shots (24-7) than the Panthers and had one more corner kick (4-3). EIU committed one more foul (5-4) in the win.
 
Chris Reed led the Panther offense with three shots (one on goal) while Amy Jo Anderson paced the Bruins with five shots (four on goal).
 
Cortney Jerzy (1-3) earned the win in goal, making 14 saves and posting the first shutout of the season for EIU. Nicole Berner (2-5-1) took the loss between the pipes for Belmont as the goalkeeper made three saves while allowing one goal.
 
The Panthers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 29 at noon against Tennessee Tech.
