CHARLESTON, Ill. – Senior
Mike Hesslau won the men's individual title on Friday afternoon as the Eastern Illinois men won the season opening EIU Walt Crawford Invite hosted at the EIU Panther Trail. The EIU women placed second in the season opening meet.
Hesslau covered the 8K course with a time of 25:35.49 as the Panthers had three of the top five men's finishers. Senior
Pablo Ramirez was second with a time of 25:40.99 and
Bryce Basting was fifth with a time of 25:51.89.
Danny Delaney was seventh with a time of 26:02.28 with
Max Gassmann rounding out the five scoring EIU runners in 12th place with a time of 26:23.05. EIU had a men's team score of 27 points with SIU Edwardsville second with 59 and the Illinois Track Club placing third with 94 points. The NCAA Division I schools in the field scored the meet as a double dual with EIU picking up wins over SIUE, Evansville and Murray State.
On the women's side freshman
Emily Brelsfoard was the top EIU finisher as she placed fourth with a time of 17:55.73 on the 5K course. Sadie Darnell of Southern Illinois was the women's first place finisher with a time of 17:37.52. SIU won the women's team title with 22 points followed by EIU in second with 57 and Murray State third with 92. The NCAA Division I schools in the field scored the meet as a double dual with EIU falling to SIU but picking up wins over Murray State, Evansville and SIUE.
Brelsfoard time was the fastest ever on the EIU Panther Trail by an EIU female runner as she also set the school record for fastest freshman time. Her mark of 17:55.73 ranks sixth on the EIU career list.
Victoria Quarton, a sophomore, was ninth with a time of 18:38.86 followed by
Julie James and
Ivy Handley as the top four Panthers runners were all freshmen and sophomores. James and Handley are both freshman runners. James was 13th with a time of 18:46.45 while Handley was 15th with a time of 18:57.56.
Gaby Duenas-Delaney was the Panthers final scored runner placing 16th with a time of 19:00.58.
EIU returns to action next Friday at the Illinois State Intercollegiate meet in Normal.
