The Eastern Illinois men's and women's cross-country teams prepare for one of their biggest meets of the season as the Panthers travel to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on Friday, October 30, to compete in the Ohio Valley Conference Cross Country Championships at Osage Centre Fields.
The Panthers will compete against conference opponents from across the OVC as both squads look to finish the season strong and compete for a conference championship. The meet will also provide an opportunity for EIU runners to earn All-OVC recognition with strong individual performances.
ON THE COURSE: The Panthers enter the conference championship following a season of competition that included the Walt Crawford Open, the ISU Redbird Invitational, the Indiana State Nike XC Town Twilight, and the Bradley Pink Classic. Eastern Illinois will look to use the experience gained throughout the season as the team takes on its conference opponents.
WOMEN'S TEAM: On the women's side, Ashlyn Denney has been one of the Panthers' leading runners throughout the 2026 season. Denney opened the year with a strong performance at the Walt Crawford Open, finishing third overall in the 5K, and continued to lead the Panthers at the Indiana State Nike XC Town Twilight. At the meet, Denney finished 32nd overall in the 6K with a time of 23:05.5. Sophie Krueger followed in 39th place with a time of 23:13.9, while Chloe Proffitt finished 41st in 23:18.3. Macie Russell is also another women's runner to watch as they finish up their season.
The EIU women will look to build on their fourth-place finish at the 2025 OVC Championships, where the Panthers recorded 82 points. Krueger and Denney are among the runners looking to help EIU make another strong showing against the conference field.
MEN'S TEAM: For the men's team, Cale Smith leads an experienced group into the championship. Smith earned second-team All-OVC honors in 2025 after finishing 12th in the conference 8K with a time of 24:45.0. Jiberil Lesman was also a key contributor after finishing 27th at last year's conference championship in 25:25.3. The Panthers will look to their returning runners to help lead the team against a competitive OVC field.
The EIU men finished fourth overall at the 2025 OVC Championships with 97 points. Smith, Lesman, and the rest of the Panthers will look to improve on that result as they compete for conference honors in Cape Girardeau.
LOOKING AHEAD: The OVC Championships will serve as a major test for both EIU squads as the Panthers look to close out the conference portion of their season with strong individual and team performances. Following the conference meet, Eastern Illinois is scheduled to compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday, November 13, at the Iowa State Cross Country Course in Ames, Iowa.
